Quick answer — when is the best time to visit Sikkim?
For most first-time travelers, the sweet spot is March to early June or October to mid-December. You get pleasant temperatures, clear skies and reliable road access to high-altitude spots like Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass.
If snowfall is your dream, plan between late-December and February. If alpine flowers and rhododendrons excite you, April-May is unbeatable. Monsoon (July-September) is dramatic but landslide-prone — recommended only for slow travel.

When does it snow in Sikkim?
Snow in Gangtok itself is rare and brief — typically a handful of days between mid-December and February. Tsomgo Lake (3,780 m) and Nathula Pass (4,310 m) see far heavier snowfall and remain snow-blanketed from December through March.
North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point at 4,724 m) gets the deepest snow — but road closures are common between December and February. If snow is the entire point of your trip, January is your best bet but always plan with a flexible day at hand.

Spring (March - May) — the wildflower window
If you've seen those Instagram reels of rhododendron-covered valleys, that's late March to mid-May. Yumthang's 'Valley of Flowers' sits at the heart of this season. Days are warm enough for light jackets, nights are crisp, and roads to Nathula reopen by late March.
This is also the most popular window for honeymoon couples and photographers. Book hotels 30-45 days ahead, especially boutique properties in Gangtok.
Autumn (October - mid-December) — the clarity season
After the monsoon washes the dust away, the Kanchenjunga reveal at Tashi View Point and Tiger Hill is at its sharpest. This is when our most-booked Darjeeling + Gangtok circuit runs.
It's also peak festival season — Dasain, Tihar and Losoong bring monasteries alive. Combine with North Sikkim for one of the most rewarding Himalayan circuits in India.
What to avoid
- Mid-June to mid-September unless you actively enjoy monsoon travel and have flexibility for landslide-related re-routing.
- School holiday peak weeks (last week of May, October Pujo week in West Bengal) without booking at least 3 weeks ahead — Gangtok rates double.
- Doing North Sikkim in less than 2 nights — the drive alone is 6-7 hours each way.
Pick your month around what matters to you — snow, flowers, festivals or fewer crowds — and we'll handle the rest. Our local team has been planning Sikkim trips for thousands of travelers from Siliguri.
